For my mentor text talk I decided to show a video called “Dyslexia: a differently wired brain” to my classmates. For my mentor text talk I focused on the idea how dyslexia had misconceptions and is different for everybody. In class the main ideas we have been focusing on were places where we are from and how those communities have shaped us into who we are today. I got diagnosed with dyslexia in fourth grade and ended up going to a special school in order to learn how to learn with dyslexia. There I learned about self advocacy and although I learned differently it doesn't make me any less smarter than my peers. That community helped shape my strong self today. Also I connected dyslexia with how everyone is different within a community. The dyslexic community is a very large one but within it dyslexia is different for everyone. Some may be better at math, some might have trouble with words, some may read slower, or some may have trouble with pronunciation. This ties into what we are going because with communities, yes they have something in common, but yet are all so different. One great decision that the video did was portray people from different backgrounds and ages. This really emphasized that everyone is different within one community.
